  • How much does a road bike weigh?
    • Top level race bikes might weigh 15 pounds. Recreational bikes like mine will come in at 18 to 20 pounds, fully outfitted. Every pound counts.
  • How many riders participate in these events?
    • The rides I’m doing in ’06 range from 50 on the Canadian Rockies to several thousand on the Miller Ride for the Arts. Death Valley's limit is 300, the L&L will have about 700. The Trek 100 should have about 1,000 riders.
  • Is my donation tax deductible?
    • Yes, all of these organizations are 501c3 charities. You contribute to that charity. Donations over $250 will be acknowledged by the charity, to comply with IRS documentation rules.
  • What are ride minimums?
    • Some events have a small, flat registration fee, regardless of distance. That’s $30 for the Miller ride. Other rides have a registration fee and larger minimum. The JDRF Death Valley ride has a very high minimum ($3500) because they provide the transportation, food and lodging for the event.
  • What’s with the tight shorts and bright shirts?
    • The tight shorts do two things. They hold a small amount of padding where it’s needed, and keep the amount of fabric to a minimum, to reduce friction and chaffing. They are strongly encouraged for 20+ mile ride. The jerseys are also functional: tight, to eliminate wind flapping, quick drying, to stay cool and bright, for safety and the all important “we’re a bit crazy” factor!
