Throughout our family of companies, we believe being a sustainable company is not just providing products and services that have positive economic, environmental and people impact ... the foundation of sustainability success comes from the inside out.
ITU and AbosrbTech provide several internal strategies and external connections that make up the essence of our sustainability.
Economic
- Employ conservative practices to position us to weather economic changes ... a philosophy that ITU has carried over since 1930 and four generations of family ownership.
- We are actively engaged in 5S and lean events throughout the company. These events are aimed at lowering operating costs. All employees are trained at making bottom line contributions to the business.
- Continue to develop new technologies to meet the continually changing needs of our customers at the lowest overall cost.
Environmental
- ITU's and Farley's processing facilities are registered to ISO 14001:2004, and AbsorbTech's South Bend processing facility is registered to ISO 14001:2004 and 9001:2008. Our goal is to have all of our processing facilities ISO 14001 registered.
- Water conservation is a priority both economically and environmentally. Conservation efforts have reduced water use by up to 60% at our processing facilities.
- The environment has always been a priority at ITU and AbsorbTech. In addition to recognition by federal, state and local environmental agencies, our award-winning patented production processes returns contaminants collected on your shop floor for beneficial reuse.
- Conservation of natural resources leads all facilities to embrace the reduce-reuse-recycle mantra. It plays a role in all purchasing decisions, processing methods, and disposition of by-products and used materials.
- Participation in regulatory development processes through a variety of methods (attending stakeholder meetings, submitting comments on proposed regulations, telephone discussions with the those writing the regulations, etc.). These activities help craft better regulations, inform regulators of actual conditions relating to our business and our customers business and get our thoughts, opinions and preferences vocalized to those writing and influencing regulatory decisions.
People
- Employee safety is paramount at ITU and AbsorbTech. This is evidenced by the fact that our Experience Modification Rate (EMR) has improved to 0.74 and is on pace to decline further next year.
- 5S and lean events throughout the company not only lower operating costs, the results simultaneously improve safety performance. Additionally, ITU frequently partners with customers and suppliers to share best practices.
- ITU has a long-standing, charitable relationship with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). In 2005, ITU started their annual Tee Up Fore the Cure charitable golf outing to benefit diabetes research through JDRF and the Max McGee National Research Center for Juvenile Diabetes.
- AbsorbU is an internal college representing a significant investment in our employees and customers. Our skilled professionals spend over 80 hours of classroom time learning to deliver Genuine Service Excellence to each and every customer.
- Our Production Technicians are trained and certified in multiple job skills. Not only does this afford greater flexibility in our production operations, the extensive time spent on safe operating practices supports our loss control efforts.
